Bees and Canola

Bees and Canola

A beekeeper's hive boxes next to a canola field, what a sweet find for this photographer!

Standing on thin ice 2

Standing on thin ice 2

Pigeon-toed in terror, as the ground begins to split below you... Just kidding, I found it that way, I swear :)

Monochrome bubbles

Monochrome bubbles

Texture in nature is a wonderful thing to lose yourself in observing. This shot was made even better by how the overcast sky reflected off of the frozen surface of the lake.

Standing on thin ice 1

Standing on thin ice 1

I swear these cracks were here before I was. I don't think I would have had the guts to remain standing in the middle of a lake long enough to take a picture if they were my fault. It does make for an interesting story though, doesn't it?

Bubbly Reflection

Bubbly Reflection

A photographer should always take the opportunity to capture a unique selfie. The bubbles make for such interesting patterns but putting into context that you're standing on a porous frozen surface enjoying them give you a different perspective.

Stacked Bubbles

Stacked Bubbles

I knew a person once who's photography business was called "One wet knee". After playing with macro photography for an hour on this pond I was all too familiar with why they called it that. But who could resist these patterns?

Water Droplet Texture

Water Droplet Texture

This image wasn't so much about the methane bubbles that we had discovered at this pond, but more about watching the way the water "breathed" its pattern against the ice above. One moment it would breathe in and you would see the droplets disappear, then as it continued the pattern they would reappear, the same and different from last time.

Mine

Mine

It looks like this cross fox is snarling over her snack of a wing she pulled out of the tundra, but in actuality that isn't the case. It just goes to show what you can capture from one moment to the next. What actually is happening is all of my fellow photographers are lying on their belly in front of her and she is happily munching away on her meal. She let us observe her entire feast before calmly wandering off in search of the next snack.

Walk with me

Walk with me

I love the soft silence of freshly falling snow. I love even more that it feels like this red fox was checking over its shoulder, beckoning me to follow him on his walk

Polar bear sentinels

Polar bear sentinels

We spent the better part of the day with this mom and her two cubs. They were terribly curious and explored everything. Here, mom is teaching one of them how to get more information about his surroundings. You can tell there isn't something that exciting going on as they're both looking in different directions!

Flying Fox

Flying Fox

I always get so excited about capturing wildlife and reflections in the same image. This one is extra cool because of the action the fox is caught in, flying across the little creek.

Is there something in my teeth

Is there something in my teeth

The same beautiful cross fox mid way through her snack. Don't those feathers in her mouth just look so tasty?!

A mother's touch

A mother's touch

This is one of my favorite moments and favorite photos. There is something so beautiful about the comfort that this cub of the year is getting from the simple contact with its mom. And its completed with the iconic Ithaca in the background. This is the picture perfect Churchill postcard!

Sit back and observe

Sit back and observe

This moment is one of my favorites from my most recent trip to Churchill. We were literally surrounded by bears, all of which just peacefully doing their thing. This little adolescent rocked back on his hips to sit and watch the scene unfolding in front of him.

Polar Bear Reflections

Polar Bear Reflections

He's a dirty little adolescent bear, but when he wandered to this clear patch of reflective ice I was thrilled to shoot his beautiful reflection. Maybe the dirt on his fur made his reflection stand out more?

Snoozing on the Tundra

Snoozing on the Tundra

"Pond Bear", as we named him, was one of my favorite bears in Churchill. He was so calm and always put on a good show for us photographers. But there is nothing quite like when an animal is comfortable enough with you to doze off.

I love Canada in Miniature

Don't these just look like miniature maple leaves? There was something just so Canadian about exploring the mountains and discovering these on a rock.

Nature's calligraphy

Nature's calligraphy

I know it was probably caused by a parasite, but the designs that you can find as you look at the forest floor look like they had to have been drawn by elves. This is a true example of Nature's calligraphy!

Symbiotic mushrooms on a stump

Symbiotic mushrooms on a stump

How neat is it to see every angle of a mushroom all in one image? These amazing organisms take advantage of any opportunity to grow!

Elk in the river 2

Environmental wildlife is definitely my favorite thing to shoot. I love spending time with such amazing creatures and trying to get more than just a headshot to capture them.

Rocks in the river

Rocks in the river

Somethings beg to be photographed in black and white. There were so many different layers and beautiful tones in this river that I was sitting on, waiting for the elk to wake up. It just had to be captured.

Bugling on the ridge

Bugling on the ridge

Is there anything nicer than a fall day in the mountains watching a majestic creature go about its life like you aren't there. These boys are so busy tending to their ladies and the interlopers that they have no time for photographers!

Bugling Elk on the river

Bugling Elk on the river

You would think that they were fairly secure on their own sandbar with their ladies, but during the rut the Elk have to defend their harem from all angles, all day long. Its hard work to keep the other boys away!

A tree on the shore

A tree on the shore

The patterns that one can see on the bed of Medicine Lake are always interesting, but never more so than in dry season and with a sullen sky overhead to reflect white on the water. You don't often find a tree in the water like this!

Swimming Bear

Swimming Bear

What a sight! A grizzly swimming at the Khuytzeymateen Inlet.

I've Got My Eye On You

I've Got My Eye On You

We were truly fortunate to be at the Khutzeymateen in Northwestern British Columbia where grizzly bears like this beautiful bear live their lives without fear of man. While on a guided photo excursion with daily outings in a zodiac, our group enjoyed seeing many bears. This bear seems to be saying "I've got my eye on you".

Secret Cove - Khutzeymateen

You think you've seen all the wonder that a place has to offer, and then you turn around a corner on the river to find this. Many of us were reduced to tears over the wonder of this quiet spot, our secret cove. The Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary bedazzled us every day with its natural splendour!
